I am a pediatric cardiac staff anesthesiologist at the Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH). My central research interest is to improve the care we provide to infants and children undergoing surgical repair of congenital cardiac defects. More specifically, both hemolysis and thrombosis are associated with significant mortality, particularly among our most vulnerable surgical patients. There is an urgent need to better understand the pathophysiology that results from the complex interactions between surgical insult, exposure to cardiopulmonary bypass, the physiologic milieu of congenital heart disease, and resuscitation including administration of adult-derived blood components. As an early-career clinician, I have published two case reports relating to patient blood management (Longacre, Mckenna, and Pavan K. Bendapudi. "Fatal hemolytic disease of the newborn due to anti‐B Isohemagglutinin: An unfamiliar presentation of a familiar disease." Transfusion 64.1 (2024): 185-188. and Longacre, M. M., et al. "Perioperative management of pediatric patients undergoing juvenile angiofibroma resection. A case series and educational review highlighting patient blood management." Pediatric Anesthesia 33.7 (2023): 510-519. 36869694) and delivered one lecture to the BCH anesthesia department on thromboelastic testing in pediatric surgical patients (2022). Since joining the cardiac anesthesia faculty, I have first authored a book chapter on hemostasis in children and neonates undergoing cardiac surgery (currently under editorial review, Chapter 39 “Hemostasis and Coagulation in Infants and Neonates after Heart Surgery” in Gravlee, Glenn P., et al. Cardiopulmonary bypass and mechanical support: principles and practice. Lippincott Williams & Wilkins 5th Edition), and was faculty at two patient blood management workshops, including at Principals of Pediatric Anesthesia and Critical Care (PPACC) in Boston, MA, and at CCAS in 2024 (Led by Dr Laura Downey). Moving forward, I aim to focus my research on patient blood management in pediatric cardiac surgical patients, and to help derive better evidence to drive a rational approach to resuscitation.
