Dr. Weitzel serves as Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at UC Davis Health, where he leads with a servant leadership approach emphasizing transparency, integrity, and shared governance. As a fellowship-trained cardiac anesthesiologist with specialized training in transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), he focuses on providing anesthetic care for patients with cardiopulmonary conditions, integrating advanced cardiac monitoring into his practice. His clinical philosophy centers on equitable, patient-centered care that creates an inclusive environment and ensures individualized treatment plans tailored to each patient's unique needs.
Dr. Weitzel's research interests span innovative technologies and evidence-based solutions to advance anesthesiology practice. He explores the application of AI in perioperative monitoring and predictive models for cognitive function, while also focusing on operating room efficiency metrics and enhanced recovery protocols. His work extends to coagulation profile testing using Point of Care devices in cardiac surgery, critical oxygen delivery, and transfusion efficacy. Through his multifaceted approach combining clinical excellence, compassionate leadership, and cutting-edge research, Dr. Weitzel continues to drive improvements in anesthetic practices and surgical outcomes.
Dr. Weitzel has established himself as a recognized expert in the field, having delivered presentations around the world on cardiac anesthesia, workforce economics, and point of care testing. His academic leadership experience includes serving as Editor in Chief of Seminars in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesiology for 11 years during his tenure at the University of Colorado, where he also held roles as ACMO of Perioperative Services and Vice Chair of Clinical Operations, contributing significantly to advancing scholarly communication in anesthesiology. This combination of international speaking engagements and editorial leadership underscores his commitment to sharing knowledge and advancing the specialty on a global scale.
